My name is Jennifer Drewanz, and I am very excited to be teaching second grade this year! I have been working in Chicago Public Schools for eight years and this is my fifth year teaching at Jahn. I graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor’s degree in education and an endorsement in early childhood. My passion is to help all children be successful in school and to develop a love for learning. My goal for is to have each one of my students be excited about learning and to love coming to school each day!
This year we have many exciting things going on in the second grade classroom. Our curriculum includes a balanced literacy approach to reading instruction and we will be using the readers and writer’s workshop models to help meet the needs of all students. This is going to create students who enjoy reading and have success with it. Our math curriculum consists of the Jump Math program. It is a math program that is researched-based and will facilitate students to engage in higher-order thinking and problem solving. In science we will be using a combination of the FOSS science program and Time For Kids. These programs use a hands on approach and allow students to interact with science. In addition to classroom learning, we will also be venturing off on several field trips to allow students to investigate their world.
When I’m not teaching I love reading, traveling, and playing with my one year old son!
