WHAT IS AN LSC?
Chicago Public Schools have Local School Councils (LSC) which are responsible for three main duties:
- Approving how school funds and resources are allocated
- Developing and monitoring the annual School Improvement Plan
- Evaluating and selecting the school's principal
Traditional Local School Councils consist of the following members:
- 6 parents
- 2 community members
- 2 teachers
- 1 non-teacher staff
- School principal
The standard composition of an Appointed Local School Council or a Board of Governors (Service Academy High Schools) is :
- 6 parents
- 2 community members
- 2 teachers
- 2 advocates
- school's principal
WHY SHOULD I RUN FOR AN LSC POSITION?
By law, Local School Councils (LSCs) play a vital role in decision-making at the local school level, thereby ensuring a quality education for all of the school’s students. The primary responsibilities of LSCs include approving how school funds and resources are allocated, approving and monitoring the implementation of the annual school improvement plan, and hiring and evaluating the school's contract principal. Make a difference, run for your local school's Local School Council!
WHO SHOULD RUN?
All parents, community members and school staff members who want to strengthen their local schools and have a positive impact on student achievement are encouraged to run. No experience or formal education is required. All meetings at 6pm.
