I was born in a small town in South Korea and came to America when I was 11 years old. Our family lived in Southern California for a few years and came to the suburbs of Illinois. As a young girl, it was challenging to learn English, make friends, and try to keep up with learning. However, I knew to live in America, I needed to quickly adjust and learn the language to make sure I did not miss out on anything.
I hold a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) from Illinois State University with endorsements in Learning Behavior Specialist 1 (LBS1) and General High School Geography. I also hold a Master of Science (M.S.) from Loyola University in School Leadership with an endorsement of the Principal and Director of Special Education. While working on my Master’s degree, I had an opportunity to study abroad in Europe.
I started my career in Education in the suburbs of Chicago. However, to fulfill my desire to serve the students in Chicago Public Schools (CPS), I moved to Chicago, and I have been with CPS for over 23 years.
During my time within CPS, I was a Special Education Teacher, Case Manager, High school Special Education Department Chair, Coordinator with the Due Process unit, Specialized Services Administrator for Office of Specialized Services, Education Manager with the Procedural Safeguards and Parental Supports unit and Director of Procedures and Standards, within the Office of Diverse Learner Supports & Services (ODLSS). In my years with CPS, regardless of my position, I have worked diligently in empowering school staff, parents, and to ensure that students with disabilities are receiving the proper and necessary support and services. Ultimately, I enjoy running into my former students, their families, and other families I got to know through my work. All of the students, families, and staff I met over the years have made me the person I am today.
During my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family. I have three beautiful children who all attend CPS High School and elementary schools. Having kids in three different schools within the District also provides me with different perspectives as a parent and employee of CPS. As a family, we like to travel, attend lacrosse and rugby games, enjoy time in our backyard, and cooking.
I believe that we can do anything as long as we have the focus, desire, determination, and the necessary support from our family, colleagues, and community.
