Principal Message - October 3rd

Greetings Husky Families

Fall is in the air!  With the new school calendar, we have had the great opportunity of being in front of our students for over a month. This time has allowed staff and students to get to know each other better, participate in engaging instruction that is culturally relevant, and the establishment of classroom routines.  This month has also allowed us to continue to build community across the campus.

As we move into the month of October, we welcome the next SEL theme - Antibullying.  Like last month’s theme, “Building Community,” this is a topic that we refuse to take lightly.  During this month, there are a number of things planned on campus including an Anti-Bullying week in mid-October.  Like last month, I would also like to suggest a few resources you can share at home with your children.  Take time to check them out.

Stick and Stone - Beth Ferry
Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon - Patty Lovell
One - Kathryn Otoshi
The Recess Queen - Alexis O’Neill and Laura Huliska-Beith
A Walk With Vanessa - Kerascoet
You, Me and Empathy - Jayneen Sanders
Enemy Pie - Derek Munson

LatinX and Indigeous People’s Month continues through October 15th.  Please stay tuned for details around events connected to this month-long celebration.  Although celebrating cultures is something we will continue to do throughout the school year.

Continue to assist us with traffic by doing your part with “Kiss and Go.”  I can assure you that once your child is dropped off, our staff, including myself, are here to support them until they enter the building.  We also seek your assistance in not parking for long periods of time.  Due to the fact that we don’t have a parking lot, spaces on Belmont are in most cases, an ideal parking spot for the staff.  Again, thank you for all that you do!

Upcoming Lockdown Drill Notice:  The safety of students, staff, and visitors is a top priority for CPS.  To support this commitment, CPS conducts emergency preparedness drills on an annual basis, in line with the Illinois Safety Drill Act.  The goal of these safety drills is to create a sense of safety for students while explaining the purpose of the drills in a developmentally appropriate way.

The Illinois Safety Drill Act (105 ILCS 128), requires a hard lockdown drill be conducted annually.  This year that drill is scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 13th.

If there is any reason why your child is not able to participate in this drill, please contact the main office at 773.534.5500.

Lunch/family income forms:  I ask that you continue to return lunch/family income forms.  While our numbers continue to increase, we have not reached our goal of 97%.  This goal assures us of state funds for the next school year.  Take time to support us by completing the form.  Please reach out if you have any questions.

Welcome to October
