Principal Message - February 13th

Greetings Husky Community

A big thank you goes out to each and everyone who played an active role in making this past weekend’s Winter Wonderland a huge success.  Whether you participated in pre or post activities, or was in attendance as a vendor or attendee, we appreciate you spending part of your weekend with us.  Please stay tuned for our next Friends of Jahn sponsored event.

This past week also provided me with the opportunity to host another Koffee With Kimbrough.  As always, it is great to spend time sharing with you what’s happening on campus.  Our next Koffee With Kimbrough will be on March 9th.  This meeting will be centered around the work of our ABAR group.  For those who missed the February session, here are the slides:  Koffee With Kimbrough 2.9.23.

It seems as if the month of February is quickly moving along.  With that, there are a number of things happening around the campus highlighting Black History Month.  Please make note of a number of events, which are listed below.  Our culminating event for the month is our school-wide assembly on February 28th at 1:30 pm.    Additional events with details are forthcoming.

During the week of February 21-24, students will participate in our Black History Month spirit week.  Each day has a theme, which consists of the following:

Tuesday, February 21st - Black Creatives Day
Dress as your favorite author, artist, sports figure, activist, or singer.

Wednesday, February 22nd - I Have A Dream to. . . . . . . one day BECOME
Dress up in your dream profession (i.e., doctor, engineer, nurse, teacher).  What would you like to become in the future?

Thursday, February 23rd - Celebrating Afro Latinos
Celebrate your favorite Afro Latino.   You can dress up like them; share something with someone else about them; or expand your knowledge and learn about an Afro Latino (i.e., Mariah Carey, Celia Cruz, Jaharell Johnson)

Friday, February 24th - Black Joy
Wear your favorite outfit to celebrate Black excellence and the contributions made by Blacks.

We also do not want to lose sight of this month’s SEL theme, “Using Your Voice.”  To date, it has been exciting walking around the campus and seeing students embracing this theme by being responsible decision makers and displaying their social awareness.  I am looking forward to seeing more during this month.

A reminder:  There will not be any after-school programming led by our school staff on Thursday, February 16th.   During this afternoon, we will participate in our FLEX day meeting from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.

Please be mindful of the additional announcements below:

Kiss and Go:  In an effort to support student transitions during arrival, we are asking all  parents/guardians to drop off students and depart from the auditorium.  While we know that adults are concerned, I can assure you that we have a number of staff members who are supervising our students.

Inclement Weather:  Unless there are harsh weather conditions (below 45 degrees, rain or snow), students will remain outside during the morning.  As always, staff members will be outside to support student arrival.  When the weather conditions are bad, students will enter the building at 7:45 am and remain in the auditorium with their class until 8 am.  With the change of weather, we encourage students to dress accordingly.

Recess Weather Guidelines:  Ideally, recess should take place outdoors on school grounds as weather, space and safety permit. Outdoor recess allows children to get fresh air, provides an opportunity for children to engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity and gives students more activity options than most indoor spaces. Outdoor recess is an important part of a child’s school day. Below are the guidelines for determining whether recess is held indoors or outdoors each day.

Weather Recess Held
Above 32 degrees with or without a wind chill Outdoors
15 to 32 degrees with or without wind chill Principal Discretion
Below 15 degrees with or without wind chill Indoors

Drop-offs and Traffic Route: For the safety of all, please do not drop students off in the crosswalk.  We have a number of curbside areas where students can be dropped off.
Please assist us by following the traffic pattern shared with families earlier this year.  We will attempt to be out there before and after school.   In cases where we are not, there should only be one way traffic on Wolcott heading north.

School Fees:  Our Local School Council approved student fees for this year of $75 per student (with a maximum of three students per family).  School fees will be used to cover supplies, books, and SEL activities.  Students in Pre-K are not required to pay fees, but can donate an amount, if they choose.
