Principal Message - February 28th

Greetings Husky Community

This week provides us with a close to Black History month and a warm welcome to Women’s History month.  As we make this transition, I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who took time to “grow” our students around their knowledge of contributions made by African-Americans.  It was great to see our students share their learning around significant events past and present.  Stay tuned to our learning during Women’s History month.

Before this month comes to a close, I would like to remind you of two final events for Black History month.  First off, is our Black History month assembly.  This event takes place on Tuesday, February 28th at 1:30 pm.  Please come out and support our students.

The closing event takes place later that evening.  Please join us for our Black History virtual cooking class with Urban Pilon.  This event takes place from 5 to 6:30 pm and provides you with an opportunity to cook from home.  Chef Roberto will prepare Afro-Caribbean recipes and will share the history behind them.  Ingredients for the recipes are available on the school website.  The Google link for the meeting is below.

As we come to a close of our February SEL theme, “Using Your Voice,” we are excited to welcome our March SEL theme, Creating Solutions/Problem Solving.    This theme is one that is “near and dear” to my heart.  Personally, I am always looking for ways to problem solve and create solutions.  Take time to check on some of the resources below:

Malala’s Magic Pencil - Malala Yousafzai

She’s Got This - Laurie Hernandez

My Strong Mind - Neils Can Hove

Sexual Health Education Lessons:  Hello Jahn families! Just want to send everyone a friendly reminder regarding the family and sexual health education lessons your students will partake in this school year. If you wish to opt out your child from any specific lesson or the whole unit please inform me in writing that you wish for your child to not receive the CPS family and sexual health education this school year.  Emails can be sent directly to Coach Pac at [email protected]

Thank you,

Coach Pac

Kiss and Go:  In an effort to support student transitions during arrival, we are asking all  parents/guardians to drop off students and depart from the auditorium.  While we know that adults are concerned, I can assure you that we have a number of staff members who are supervising our students.

Inclement Weather:  Unless there are harsh weather conditions (below 45 degrees, rain or snow), students will remain outside during the morning.  As always, staff members will be outside to support student arrival.  When the weather conditions are bad, students will enter the building at 7:45 am and remain in the auditorium with their class until 8 am.  With the change of weather, we encourage students to dress accordingly.

Recess Weather Guidelines:  Ideally, recess should take place outdoors on school grounds as weather, space and safety permit. Outdoor recess allows children to get fresh air, provides an opportunity for children to engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity and gives students more activity options than most indoor spaces. Outdoor recess is an important part of a child’s school day. Below are the guidelines for determining whether recess is held indoors or outdoors each day.

Weather

Recess Held

Above 32 degrees with or without a wind chill

Outdoors

15 to 32 degrees with or without wind chill

Principal Discretion

Below 15 degrees with or without wind chill

Indoors

Drop-offs and Traffic Route: For the safety of all, please do not drop students off in the crosswalk.  We have a number of curbside areas where students can be dropped off.

Please assist us by following the traffic pattern shared with families earlier this year.  We will attempt to be out there before and after school.   In cases where we are not, there should only be one way traffic on Wolcott heading north.

School Fees:  Our Local School Council approved student fees for this year of $75 per student (with a maximum of three students per family).  School fees will be used to cover supplies, books, and SEL activities.  Students in Pre-K are not required to pay fees, but can donate an amount, if they choose.
