Principal Message - April 11th

Greetings Husky Community

Welcome Back!!  I trust and hope that you had a wonderful and relaxing break.  As I shared with the staff, I hope that you also took time to  embrace the 3R’s (Relax, Reflect, and Reset).

It was indeed a pleasure to see our students back on campus.  Popping in and out of classrooms today provided me with the opportunity to not only see great instruction, but also those intentional moments where classroom communities incorporated social emotional learning (SEL) through reacclimating students back into the Jahn community.  #priceless.  In the coming weeks, there’s so much to look forward to on the Jahn campus.  We look forward to having you be a part of what happens.  Stay tuned.

In thinking about student voice, I would love to introduce you to another group of students amplifying their name on campus.  This group consists of our Daily Message Designers.  This team has the responsibility of providing a daily message outside of our auditorium.  The message, in most cases, includes fun facts and opportunities for our student body to interact through responding to questions within the message.  This team consists of the following students:  6th graders Amaya G.,  Issa R.,  Andres V-T., Prince-Pierre Z. and 7th grader, Alinise R.  Take a moment to check out their inspirational messages when you are in the building.

The month of April also brings us a new SEL theme.  This month’s theme is Self Care.  Be on the lookout as I attempt to do a better job of incorporating this theme into my life daily.  I look forward to seeing how this theme comes to life in the classrooms.   Below are a few suggested readings and resources you can use at home to connect to the theme:

Pre-K-2:  I Am Peace - Susan Verde
3rd-5th grade:  Creative Coping Skills for Tweens and Teens - Bonnie Thomas
6th - 8th grade:  Take in the Good - Gina Biegel

Please be mindful of the following announcements.

Have a wonderful week!

Derrick

Pre-K application window:  The window for Pre-K applications is April 11 through May 2. We would love to have your child join our family.  Stay tuned for an announcement around our open house that will be scheduled during the week of April 23rd.  During that week, families will have the opportunity to apply in person and visit classrooms.  Applications can also be completed online at chicagoearlylearning.com

My Voice, My School Parent/Guardian Survey:  The annual Parent/Guardian Survey portion of My Voice, My School is now available.  The survey will close April 30th.  If you have any questions, please email [email protected]

Kiss and Go:  In an effort to support student transitions during arrival, we are asking all  parents/guardians to drop off students and depart from the auditorium.  While we know that adults are concerned, I can assure you that we have a number of staff members who are supervising our students.

Drop-offs and Traffic Route: For the safety of all, please do not drop students off in the crosswalk.  We have a number of curbside areas where students can be dropped off.

Please assist us by following the traffic pattern shared with families earlier this year.  We will attempt to be out there before and after school.   In cases where we are not, there should only be one way traffic on Wolcott heading north.
