Intermediate Education (3-4)
Welcome to the Jahn School Intermediate section! This school year, our team will implement the below curriculums.
English Language Arts
Students in grades K-4 use Wit & Wisdom for English Language Arts. With Wit & Wisdom, students practice reading, writing, speaking and listening, academic vocabulary, and style and conventions in concert to build holistic ELA knowledge. Each module is crafted around a topic essential for building knowledge, vocabulary, and writing skills. These topics strategically reoccur, empowering students to deepen their understanding of core knowledge while scaffolding to writing and speaking on increasingly complex ideas.
Students in grades K-8 use Envision for mathematics. Envision focuses on deep conceptual math understanding aided by visual models, student-centered projects, 3-act tasks, and personalized learning. Envision offers comprehensive vertical alignment from Kindergarten through 8th grade to ensuring all mathematical standards are taught in the most effective way. Envision combines problem-based learning with visual learning. Students learn more about math by solving rich, reality-based problems. They gain a deeper, clearer understanding of math concepts with visual models and scaffolds in every lesson.
Students in grades K-5 use FOSS for science. FOSS (Full Option Science System) is a research-based science curriculum developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley. The FOSS Program provides tools and strategies to engage students and teachers in enduring experiences that lead to a deeper understanding of the natural and designed worlds. The best way for students to appreciate the scientific method, learn important scientific concepts, and develop the ability to think well is to actively participate in scientific practices through their own investigations and analyses. The FOSS Program was created specifically to provide students with meaningful experiences through engaging with this active participation in scientific practices.
Students in grades K-8 will utilize a variety of resources for social studies. Teachers plan units and lessons aligned with the ISBE Social Studies Standards.
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
Students in grades K-8 use the Second Step curriculum for SEL lessons. Children need social-emotional skills to thrive both in the classroom and in life.
The Second Step curriculum teaches children techniques to:
- Gain confidence
- Set goals
- Make better decisions
- Collaborate with others in work and play
- Navigate the world more effectively
